During an interview before the highly anticipated Barbie flick, 42-year-old Ryan Gosling revealed that his family was not in agreement that he had a strong Ken vibe. Gosling, who has two daughters, said that his kids play with Barbie toys but don’t refer to them as Barbie or Ken.
Ryan Gosling Is Ken
According to Ryan Gosling, his daughters have named their Barbies differently and created complicated backstories for them. He shared how interesting it was to him that his kids didn’t just brush their hair and dress them up but also gave them complicated lives, stories, relationships, hopes, and dreams. Apparently, none of those dolls actually have names that are Barbie. The actor further marveled at how incredibly intricate the world they’ve created is.
Gosling also admitted that his children were confused to find out he was cast as Ken. Apparently, they didn’t even name their Ken dolls. According to Gosling, one was named Darrell and worked at a grocery store. One of the Barbies was called Gym Class and had met Darrell at the grocery store, but was focusing on herself and didn’t get into a relationship with him.
Barbie Was Released on July 20th
Ryan Gosling was also asked what his daughters’ thoughts on him playing Ken were. He replied that Ken was such a nonpresence in their world that they didn’t understand what there was to play about him.
Gosling also touched upon the film’s nature, in which Ken is in the traditional female part of supporting the lead. He admitted that he grew up in a household run by women. Apparently, his sister didn’t have Barbies, but his older sister was his hero growing up. She walked him to school and kept him safe. Gosling had clear admiration for his sister, sharing how she was his leader, and he was happy to follow. He likened his part in the movie to being a kid again because he easily fell into that dynamic.
