There are multiple reasons why people want to get married. One of the obvious ones is that you want to spend your life with someone and feel close to another person. People also wish to have someone to lean on during hard times. But a recent study also shows there are plenty of health reasons you should look forward to tying the knot!
How the Study Was Conducted
The research by the University of Colorado took men between the ages of 45 and 84 – they were the group to be studied. The data was taken from a previous research project for the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis. The researchers waited, and when the 10-year mark hit, they looked at 94 of the diagnosed men and compared their marital status to the survival rate when they were diagnosed. They also took into account mood and age.
What the Researchers Found
When they looked at that 10-year mark and the men, they found that those who remained bachelors were likely to pass away only five years after their diagnosis. Another interesting fact that amazed them was that even the men who had been married for at least a portion of their lives had a boost in their longevity. Katarina Leyba, the lead author, says there is a correlation between the marital status and prognosis in men with heart failure, and they need to know why that is.
There Needs to Be More Information
The researchers are adamant that another study is needed to figure out the reasoning behind the correlation between marital status and the end-of-life prognosis because there are a few likely reasons, they believe. With help from a Harvard project, they figured that companionship that comes from marriage boosts life expectancy. They also found that the person in your life can monitor your health and influence positive behavior, which would also help!
