During a recent investor’s call, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav made a stunning announcement that there will be new Lord of the Rings movies. Apparently, Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema will be working together to cook up more movies from Tolkien’s beloved world.
New Lord of the Rings Movies
While fans believed every possible storyline from J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit had been told, Hollywood has found a way to keep things going. So far, it’s unclear what the movies are going to be about, but the rights to The Third Age of Middle Earth were given to Warner Bros. in a multi-year deal, including the rights over characters like Gandalf, Bilbo, and Aragorn. This has been interpreted as a clear indication that origin stories might be in the works.
According to Warner Bros. bosses Pamela Abdy and Michael De Luca, they won’t be treading over Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings films. In a joint statement, they said that despite the scope and detail of the Peter Jackson trilogies, the vast, complex, and dazzling world of Middle Earth remained largely unexplored on film. So, the two invited fans to go deeper into the cinematic world of Middle Earth and said it was an honor for them to do so.
The New Movies Will Honor the Past
It is interesting to see what the new movies will offer. The Lord of the Rings movies by Peter Jackson were huge hits, but the Hobbit trilogy didn’t perform very well. The recent series by Prime Video, The Rings of Power, has received mixed reactions after its premiere last year, despite being the most expensive series ever made. Lee Guinchard, CEO of Freemode, a part of Embracer, stated that they would navigate their new slate of films carefully. He added that they understood how cherished these works were and promised to honor the past while looking to the future as they work together with New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures. According to him, everyone will adhere to the strongest level of quality and production values.
So far, there has been no information about the possible release date for the new movies, so an update is certainly coming in the near future.
